#A185 Altered Books

Instructor: Hillary Gattian

Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Day: Tuesdays

Dates: Sept. 20, 27, Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8

Class Description:

For adults and teens age 16 and older

Focus on the book as object is almost an act of rebellion in contemporary times. In this course, you will use the underlying information and imagery found in uniquely chosen secondhand books as both inspiration and a ready surface on which to make new artwork. Books become both sketchbook and canvas. Free from the intimidation of a blank white page, you will explore conceptual ideas through a variety of techniques and media.

Class includes preparation of the books for alteration and versatile methods to work into the pages, including collage, painting, drawing, and embroidery. Investigations can relate and respond to the content of the book or be driven by personal interests. The latter part of this 8-week class culminates with creation of an artwork inspired by your book explorations.

This class is well suited for those with no previous experience, as well as practiced makers looking for a new way to approach familiar mediums. The materials fee supplies participants with paints, brushes and adhesive that will be yours to keep.
