What is Handbuilding?

“Handbuilding is an ancient pottery-making technique that involves creating forms without a pottery wheel, using the hands, fingers, and simple tools. The most common handbuilding techniques are pinch pottery, coil building, and slab building” -Ceramic Arts Network

About this class:

This class will introduce the basic handbuilding techniques used to build functional pottery forms.  The class will focus mostly on slab building techniques using bisque molds and stamps, but will also cover the basics of pinch pots and coil building.  No previous experience in clay is needed for this class.  At the end of this class, you will have created a full dinnerware set for two (possibly more!)

Winter Weather NOTE:

If the Athens City Schools are closed due to inclement weather on a class or workshop day, all afternoon and evening programming will be cancelled for safety.  We don’t want anyone driving on bad roads!  If a workshop you signed up for is cancelled, the Education Director will contact you about refunds or crediting your registration fee.

About the instructor:

This will be Sasha’s first class with the Dairy Barn, and we are just thrilled to have such an accomplished artist with us!

Sasha Sigetic graduated from Ohio University with a BFA in Ceramics. She has been the studio assistant to some amazing mentors, Joe Bova and Lisa Orr.  Sasha also had a ceramics and glass fusing studio while living in Austin, Tx after college as well as working for Armadillo Clay, the largest clay manufacturer in Texas. After receiving a certification in Permaculture Design she moved back to Athens, Ohio to add herbalism and farming to her long list of interests and pursuits. She now resides in Meigs County with her partner, daughter, herd of British Guernsey dairy goats and pack of Great Pyrenees to guard the goats. She runs a raw milk herd share and is also a lover of spinning, knitting and crochet.
