Instructor: Rachael Bailey
Wednesdays from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
8 sessions starting March 20, 27, April 3, 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8.
About this Class:
This class is designed for those who have basic painting understanding, but want to learn more about oil painting. During this course, we will discuss more intermediary oil painting techniques, such as: different blending and planar techniques, how to mix complex colors and rich neutrals, how to build depth of color with glazing techniques, and different ground options to work on. The first 5 classes will be single-piece exercises with a shared image reference to build basic understanding of concepts. The last three weeks will be students choosing their images and receiving individual instructor aid to create a piece they are interested in!
Participants will bring their own materials for this course.
Week 1: Review mixing colors to match what is seen, and how to start a painting. Discuss more complex color mixing and the importance of neutrals.
Week 2: Talking about planes and strokes; making a painting out of just brush strokes.
Week 3: How to blend, different blending techniques, and discuss when to blend and when to use planes.
Week 4: How to build complex layers of color using glazing.
Week 5: Working on a ground: different grounds you can create to work on other than white.
Weeks 6, 7, 8: Individual projects—helping you paint what you want to!
About the Instructor:
Rachael Bailey recently moved to Athens from New Albany, IN, near the Louisville, KY area. She graduated from Indiana University Southeast with BFAs in Drawing and in Painting, as well as an Art History Minor. She works with mixed media to make pieces which bring realism and abstract methods together to create a visceral experience, exploring her personal experiences and visually representing the emotions which accompany them. While at IU Southeast, she gained teaching experience through TAing, as well as teaching some local workshops, and found a passion for teaching which she brings with her to the Dairy Barn.
