Hillary Gattian – Dairy Barn Teaching Artist

Hillary Gattian is an interdisciplinary artist born and raised in Ventura, California. She initially studied architecture in San Luis Obispo, California but changed her area of study and graduated with her BFA in Painting from Sonoma State University in Rhonert Park, California in 2015. While there she made paintings, drawings, ceramic work and began making multimedia installation-based work focused on interactions of the built and natural environments through a lens of change and nostalgia.

Hillary received her MFA in Painting + Drawing from Ohio University in 2018. While in graduate school she taught painting, drawing and foundations courses. Her work during that time centered around site specific installations delving further into explorations of space investigating the impacts of the digital world on change and in person experiences.

After receiving her MFA, Hillary taught Drawing, 2D Design and Color Theory at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Being back in a coastal region brought water histories and the built and natural environment dichotomy to the forefront of her artistic practice. Hillary returned to Athens, Ohio in 2021 where she lives with her fiancé and three cats. She is serving as the Gallery Coordinator for Ohio University Art Galleries along with teaching courses for the School of Art + Design.
