Carol Dawson – Dairy Barn Teaching Artist

Carol Dawson is a ceramic artist based in Athens, Ohio. Originally from Columbus, they grew up immersed in creativity, learning drawing, painting, sculpting, and music from an early age under the guidance of their artist mother. After returning to the arts in 2000 through quilting and fiber work, Carol rediscovered their passion for three-dimensional form in 2023, when a handbuilding class at the Dairy Barn ignited their interest in ceramics.

Since then, they have immersed themselves deeply in the craft—taking multiple handbuilding and wheel-throwing courses and expanding their knowledge through online webinars—while rekindling a longtime love of sculptural practice. Carol’s ceramic work is driven by exploration and surface experimentation. They work with a wide range of techniques, including paper and wax resist, sgraffito, Cuerda Seca, stencil work, latex masking, slip application, and various glazing methods. They are also currently experimenting with airbrushed pottery.

Inspiration comes from many sources, particularly the global ceramics community online and the International Ceramic Arts Network, where Carol is an active member. At the heart of Carol’s practice is a commitment to joy, curiosity, and the thrill of discovering new methods. They are grateful for the supportive ceramics community at the Dairy Barn and look forward to giving back by teaching and sharing their passion with others.
